What happens if I fail my Mod 1?

(And Why It’s Not the End of the World)

It is the moment every rider dreads. You’re at the DVSA Multi-Purpose Test Centre, you’ve smashed the slalom and the figure of eight, but you come into the swerve-test a bit too hot, clip a blue cone, or put a foot down on the U-turn.

The examiner walks over, clipboard in hand, and gives you the bad news: it’s a fail.

First of all, take a deep breath. Failing your Module 1 (Mod 1) is incredibly common. The off-road circuit is designed to test your machine control to a millimetre-perfect standard, and nerves can get the better of anyone on the day.

At 2Mototraining, we often arrange our intensive courses so you take your Mod 1 and Module 2 (Mod 2) tests on the exact same day. It’s a fantastic, efficient way to get your full licence in one fell swoop—but it does mean you need to know how the rules work if Mod 1 doesn’t go quite to plan.

Here is exactly what happens next, how the regulations affect your day, and how to bounce back.

The Immediate Rules: The 3-Day Wait

The DVSA has a strict legal rule regarding Mod 1 failures: you must wait 3 clear working days before you can retake the test.

  • Note that Sundays and Bank Holidays do not count as working days, but Saturdays usually do.
  • For example, if you fail on a Tuesday, your 3 clear working days are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The earliest you could physically sit the test again would be the Saturday or the following Monday.

The cost to rebook just the DVSA Mod 1 test slot itself is currently £15.50. However, keep in mind that you will also need to factor in the cost of hiring your training school’s bike and your instructor’s time to take you back to the test centre.

The Knock-on Effect: What Happens to My Mod 2 Test Today?

Because you cannot legally sit the Mod 2 (on-road) test without a valid Mod 1 pass certificate, failing the morning Mod 1 test means you will not be able to sit your Mod 2 test later that day.

To cancel or reschedule a DVSA test without losing your fee, you must give them 3 clear working days’ notice. Because your Mod 2 test is on the same day, you won’t be able to give enough notice to the DVSA. Unfortunately, this means you will forfeit the DVSA Mod 2 test fee (£75), and we will need to rebook both modules for your next attempt.

While losing the test fee is frustrating, please don’t let it panic you. It is a completely standard part of the intensive training process across the UK, and our team is fully geared up to get you rebooked and turned around as quickly as possible.

The Most Common Reasons People Fail Mod 1

Knowing why people fail can help you avoid making the same mistake twice. The test allows you up to 5 minor faults (riding faults), but 1 serious or dangerous fault is an immediate fail.

The usual suspects include:

  • Hitting a Cone: Misjudging the slalom or target-fixing on a cone during the avoidance/swerve exercise.
  • The U-Turn: Putting a foot down because the bike lost momentum, or crossing the white line representing the kerb.
  • Failing to Meet the Speed: For the emergency stop and the swerve/avoidance exercises, you must reach at least 50 km/h (around 31.5 mph). If you drop below 48 km/h, it’s an immediate serious fault.
  • Forgetting Observations: Not doing your life-savers (blind-spot checks) before moving off from a stopped position inside the circuit. The examiner treats the tarmac like a live road!

How We Bounce Back and Pass Next Time

Failing is just a temporary detour, not a dead end. Here is how we get you back on track for round two:

1. We Debrief the Fail Sheet

Your examiner will hand you a digital or paper copy of your test report. We’ll look at exactly what went wrong. Was it just a one-off nervous mistake (like a foot down), or a technical issue (like not hitting the speed trap)?

2. We Run a Top-Up Session

We won’t just send you back to the test centre blindly. Before your retest date, we will get you back out on our private training area to isolate the exact manoeuvre that tripped you up, practising it until it feels like second nature.

3. Reset Your Mindset

On your retest, remember that you already know exactly what to expect. The mystery is gone. You know how the gates look, you know how the examiner speaks, and you know the layout. Use that familiarity to calm your nerves.

The 2Mototraining Verdict

An Olympic athlete doesn’t quit if they drop a baton in practice, and you shouldn’t give up on your biking dreams just because of a knocked-over cone. Same-day testing is a high-reward route that works for hundreds of our students, but if a hitch happens, we’ve got your back.

If you’ve recently had a setback on your Mod 1, or you want to book an intensive course with instructors who will ensure you are 100% prepared, get in touch with 2Mototraining today. We’ll get you sorted, get you confident, and get that pass certificate in your hand!
